Reflection: The Transfiguration of the Lord: "This is My Beloved Son. Listen to Him."

The Transfiguration...

Jesus brought Peter, James and John to the top of the mountain. And He was transfigured before them, and His clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them. Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses, and they were conversing with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, "Rabbi, it is good that we are here! Let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah." He hardly knew what to say they were so terrified. Mark 9:2-6

Jesus wanted His disciples to know that He would always be with them. He was preparing them for the sufferings to come. Jesus appeared as the Light of the World in dazzling white. On either side of Him, Moses and Elijah appeared.  Always remember that Jesus is with you and He wants to console you. As you draw near, ponder the Father's words to listen to Jesus.

Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them; from the cloud came a voice, "This is My Beloved Son. Listen to Him." Mark 9:7

The Father’s voice spoke that this was His Beloved Son. The Holy Spirit appeared as a cloud of glory. The Transfiguration was an experience that did not last very long. Peter wanted to erect tents and stay there, but this was not the purpose. Jesus gave them this experience to build up their hope so that they would be sustained for the sufferings to come. The path called the Via Dolorosa lay before Him and before them. The Transfiguration was to show them that there would be suffering on the Way of the Cross but that His death would lead to new life.  Through the Transfiguration, Jesus gave Peter, James and John a glimpse of eternal life.

As we journey through life, we may have many sufferings, as Mary did on the Way of the Cross. Jesus gave hope to the Apostles at the Transfiguration and He gives us that hope. Draw close to Jesus and allow Him to transform you. Spend time in silent prayer in Eucharistic adoration or before the tabernacle in a chapel. Jesus will speak to you in the silence.

Listen to Him...
